My web page rocks!     No comments yet

Have you seen my new web page yet? It rocks! Big thanks to Dad’s friend Josh for putting all that stuff together for me. Whenever there’s new video of me out doing stuff, Dad’s going to make sure it goes on that page, and we’ve also got photo galleries. If you take any pictures of me out at events, you can upload them, and you can check out the pictures already taken. I know I sound vain, but hey… I’m cute!

But there’s more. Did you know that looking at pictures of cute animals can be healthy? Check this out:

When people watched 10 minutes of animal footage, their heart rate and blood pressure dipped not only while they were under stress, but it stayed lower even afterward. It didn’t matter whether the animal was scaly, feathered or furry. Even better, the sound doesn’t have to be on to reap the calming benefits, so you can sneak a peek at the latest panda/polar bear/Labrador retriever clips before your next tension-filled meeting, and your officemates will never know.

Hey! I’m a retriever! Maybe not the Labrador kind, but… I retrieve things! Really! I swear!

Anyway, so if you’re sitting at work and you’re not feeling so hot about things, just visit my photo galleries and if your boss says something, just point him or her to that article and go back to watching my antics.

It's me, Doppler!     1 comment

Image and video hosting by TinyPicHi! It’s me, Doppler, the Weather Dog! My dad (that’s the awesome Paul Ossmann) asked me to start blogging on our new blog site, 11AliveBlogs.com. I don’t really have a lot to say yet, but I’m going out on my very first live shot ever tonight, and that’s pretty exciting!

While you’re here… I know that it’s sometimes hard to keep up with everyone’s blogs. With my schedule — sleeping, eating, training, playing, visiting my friends at 11Alive, and going out and meeting people — even I sometimes run out of time. So I asked my friend Josh to make an RSS feed for me. You can click here to add it to your RSS reader. If you’re not sure what all this RSS stuff is, that’s okay too; there’s a whole page to help you on 11Alive.com.

So, how’d I do? Do you like my blog? Are you going to subscribe? Please do! And if you somehow found my blog without going to my page, click here to see it! There’s videos and photos and the weather too, and if you haven’t signed up for my newsletter, you can do that there!

Okay! Bye!

you pay with time     No comments yet

I found this quotation this morning and it really struck me:

“You don’t really pay for things with money, you pay for them with time. ‘In five years, I’ll have put enough away to buy that vacation house we want. Then I’ll slow down.’ That means the house will cost you five years; one-twelfth of your adult life. Translate the dollar value of the house, car, or anything else into time, and then see if it’s still worth it. Sometimes you can’t do what you want and have what you want at once because each requires a different expenditure of time. The phrase ’spending your time’ is not a metaphor. It’s how life works.” -Charles Spezzano

Several months ago, during the height of the first gas crisis, I wrote a blog entry about how you should consider how much money your trip will cost you, not how much gas or how many miles. Now that gas is below $2 (at least, it is where I live), people are a little less worried about how much it costs to drive somewhere.

That quote above may be even more telling.

Science fiction plays with currency a lot. From Star Trek’s gold-pressed latinum to Walter Jon Williams’s use of calories as money in The Green Leopard Plague (a really interesting novella, by the way), as a sci-fi fan I’ve seen a lot of alternative currencies and ways of measuring costs. But I think, in the end, that time is probably the best one. I’m a busy person — this job, plus exercise, plus my child, plus writing, plus cooking, plus cleaning, plus time to relax… how much am I spending by doing everything that I need and want to do? How much time do I spend just sitting around paging through RSS feeds? What should I be spending my time on instead?

Probably not writing a blog entry lamenting about the time I’m spending.

aptly-named     No comments yet

A teenager was mauled by a cougar in South Florida.

Police said the 70-pound cougar attacked a 16-year-old girl in Northwest Miami-Dade County Saturday afternoon.

The cougar, named Chaos, was secured in the back of a home on Northwest 84th Avenue when Anthony Zittnick decided he wanted to show off the big cat to a friend, neighbors said.

Why is there a cougar in the backyard of a home in South Florida? A cougar that’s apparently someone’s pet, not one of those wild ones brought in by the destruction of their natural habitat. And what’s a 16-year-old girl doing near it? It only looks like a kitty, kid.

At least it’s aptly-named. “Chaos” the cougar. Can’t beat that.

falling asleep on the job     No comments yet

Sometimes, falling asleep on the job results in awesomeness. Even people who don’t care for Oreos must respect this.
