Save Money in the Kitchen and Go Green!     No comments yet

Several 11Alive viewers who entered our Ways to Save Gold Medal contest suggested ways you can save in the kitchen.

Viewer Sue Edwards likes cooking with fresh herbs but doesn’t like having to throw away the leftovers, so she freezes them. First she sprays the herbs with cold water, and then she wraps them in plastic wrap, puts them in a plastic bag and stores them in the freezer.

Many thrifty shoppers also reuse resealable plastic food storage bags. They rinse them out with a few drops of dish soap, stand then up to dry and then use them over again.

Catherine Hendee’s entry suggested using canisters instead of plastic bags throughout the kitchen. She likes her canister method of food storage because it’s also good for the environment. She said her food stays fresh longer when she  takes  it out  of boxes and packages and stores it in tightly sealed canisters.

Other people who are trying to go green avoid using paper towels and instead use microfiber cloths which can be washed and reused over and over again.

The Stimulus Odd-Couple     1 comment

jerry 3When we set out to do something different, something big, I told Jerry Carnes, “We’re going to be best friends by the end of this.”

“Or, you’ll want to kill me,” he said.  I gave him a quizzical look.  Five days later, I knew what he meant.

Hopefully, he won’t be offended by the comparison, but I think fellow 11Alive reporter, Jerry Carnes, and I have a lot in common.  We’re both backpack journalists (AKA one-man bands); which means we shoot, write, edit, and front our own material.  We’re both our own worst critics; we agonize over our work and can always find one thing we should have/could have/would have done better.  We’re both passionate about what we do.  In my case, you can chalk it up to my under-30, single, married-to-the-job kind of life.  But Jerry’s been doing this for a long time, and he’s still passionate about coming into work.  Every. Single. Day.  I find that kind of amazing.

Last week, while digging for a story, we ran into each other and decided to team up.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (AKA the stimulus bill) is 407 pages long.  The reports tracking the money include hundreds of additional pages.  As a taxpayer, you have a right to know where that money is going.  After all, it’s YOUR money.  As a journalist, it’s my job to tell you.   As an employee of 11Alive, it’s a given.  Last September, we dedicated half of an 11:00 newscast to a stimulus special.  Since then, we’ve stayed on top of where your money is going.  But Jerry and I still had a lot of questions.  Mostly, what’s taking so long?

While going through some GDOT reports, we found a lot of “$0” under stimulus projects.  We wondered how we could measure the success or failure of the stimulus bill if half of it hadn’t even started.  Following the “two heads are better than one” belief, Jerry and I decided to do a tag-team stimulus special.  Our News director liked the idea, and it was slated to run in the 11:00 newscast after the opening ceremonies of the Olympics.   Here’s what happened over the next  five work days (by the numbers):

-47 stimulus projects reviewed in 6 Metro-Atlanta countiesjerry julie park2

-21 work sites visited

-600+ pages of paperwork read, scanned, and scribbled on

-4 pages of script written, trashed, and re-written at least five times

Funny quotes that came from the week:

“Someone stole my trashcan.  And the worst part is, when my brain turns to mush, I have no way to catch it now.” – Jerry (perhaps this was in reaction to my color-coding, highlighting, post-it noting system that made a lot of sense…. to me)

It’s like half my day just disappeared into a black hole! (followed by a series of exclamations I cannot post here)”Me after a brand new tape went “bad” and everything on it was unusable

News Director: You need to put that in the script.  Me: We had it and we took it outJerry: We had it? No, we didn’t.  Me: Yes, we did.  We fought about it. Jerry: We didn’t fight about anything Me: Sighhhh.”

Later, from co-worker: “You sounded like a married couple.  Men never recognize a fight.”

Jerry: Should I lean out or lean in? Kathy (photog shooting stand-ups): Scoonch that way.  Jerry: Scoonch?  What is scoonch?”

It turns out, a truly collaborative process is harder than I thought it would be.  We didn’t always agree on the writing, the shooting, the editing.  We didn’t always see eye-to-eye on what to include and what to cut out. As journalists, we have our individual styles.  It’s not that one is better than the other. It’s just WHO WE ARE.  But in this story, we somehow blended those styles together to craft an important piece of journalism.  I’m proud of it.   I learned a few things from Jerry.  Maybe he learned something from me…. Probably not that color-coding, highlighting, post-it noting system.  But he’ll miss it.  I know he will.

Make the Most of Cyber Monday!     2 comments

Spending Monday shopping online?   Here are some ways to maximize your savings.

If you launch your shopping trip from a site like ebates.com or mypoints.com you can get rebates on top of what you already save. Some rebates are as high as 15%.

Use retailmenot.com to find coupon codes and free shipping. However, retail expert Fatima Mehdikarimi suggests online shoppers google the company at which they plan to shop along with the phrase “promo code.” (For example: Home Depot promo code) Mehdikarimi said she often finds deeper discounts than the code compilation sites offer.

Before you make a purchase compare prices using tools like pricegrabber.com.

Since quantities are often limited on deeply discounted items, register in advance at the online stores where you plan to shop. That way, you won’t have to start an account before you check out.

With some sales, even if you have an item in your cyber shopping cart, it can disappear into someone else’s if you don’t check out quickly.

To avoid a lot of cumbersome typing use sites like roboform.com. You only have to fill out your name, address and other information once.  After that, roboform.com will fill out forms with just one click.   The service offers a free version as well as Roboform pro, which you have to pay for.

And remember prices can change by the hour. Sign up for email alerts on cybermonday.com

Designer Bargains At Rue la la!     4 comments

Discount designer boutiques have sprung up on the internet lately.  Many of them require an  invitation by an existing member and some have waiting  lists.

Some are extremely expensive.  But Ruelala.com features designers like Prada, Nannett Lepore, Michael Kors, BCBG and Cole Haan and Seven For All Mankind, often at 70% off retail store prices.  I scored Sevens for fall for 69.99, not too shabby!  And I didn’t have to scour my bargain haunts all  around Atlanta for my size!

Ruelala has more than 500 thousand members. It allows returns but for store credit only.

For an invitation to shop, click on http://www.ruelala.com/invite/valuesval

Once you join,  you can invite friends to join and you carn store credits when they make a purchase.  Sales normally start at 11am and popular items sell out quickly!

Free Chicken Goes Viral, Then Goes Away     No comments yet

Here’s what can happen when a great deal spreads through the blogosphere like wildfire.

Yesterday a blogger  emailed me a coupon for a FREE Rotisserie Chicken at Whole Foods, a $7.99 value.  First I printed it out (of course) Then, I added it to my list to consider for Friday Freebies.  The coupon didn’t have a unique bar code or any security features to prevent people from printing multiple copies.   To make sure it was legit, I called Whole Foods Public Relations Department.

The very nice PR representative told me the coupon had been mailed to certain customers for registering on the Whole Foods website and they hadn’t expected it to be emailed throughout the blogosphere or placed on blogs (which is had been, all over the place)    She asked me not to put it on TV or 11Alive.com and I said sure.

By afernoon, I had seen the coupon on half a dozen money saving blogs. By the end of the day, the expiration date had changed from September 15th to August 27th ( yesterday)

I went to my local Whole Foods to try out the coupon and found about 6 other people waiting for the lastest batch of Rotisserie Chickens, coupons in hand.   I also bought some other items AND of course registered on Wholefoods.com, so kind of a win-win even though they probably gave out a lot more free chicken then they anticipated.   There was a similar situation with KFC and Free Chicken on Oprah Winfrey a few months ago but KFC was so bombarded they couldn’t honor the coupons!!

I’ll be checking my email for the latest Freebie from Whole Foods now that I’m signed up officially!
